This is a dipping project, not a drawing test. The twists suggest the face, and slightly uneven eyes give each ghost a personality. Start with six pieces to get comfortable with the coating.
Ingredients
- 24 small pretzel twists
- 8 ounces (225 g) white candy melting wafers, or white baking chocolate suitable for melting
- 48 mini semisweet chocolate chips, for eyes
Gather your tools
A microwave-safe dry bowl, fork, spoon and a parchment-lined tray. A small silicone spatula helps scrape the bowl. Check the coating package for its melting instructions.
Make the ghosts
- Prepare the landing place. Line your tray and count out the pretzels and chocolate-chip eyes. Keep water away from the melting bowl.
- Melt gently. Heat the coating according to its package. If microwave directions allow, use short intervals at reduced power, stirring thoroughly between them. Stop when small pieces remain and stir until smooth. The bowl and coating can be hot.
- Dip one pretzel. Lower it into the coating with a fork, lift and let the excess drip back. A thin coating keeps the twist recognizable; filled-in gaps simply make a different ghost.
- Add a face. Set it on parchment and gently place two mini chips, points down, while the coating is still soft. Let an adult handle the hot coating.
- Repeat and set. Leave the tray in a cool room until firm, about 20–30 minutes, or refrigerate briefly if the kitchen is warm. Actual setting time depends on your coating and room temperature.
If the coating fights back
If it thickens while you work, warm it briefly according to the package and stir. Do not splash water into it. If it becomes grainy or smells scorched, start a fresh small batch. If the faces slide, let the coating stand for a moment before adding the eyes.
Storage and sharing
Once fully set, place in an airtight container with parchment between layers. For best texture, make them the day before serving and enjoy within about three days in a cool, dry room; refrigerate if the coating softens. These are quality suggestions, not validated shelf-life testing. Keep them away from warm windows and cars.
Common allergens include wheat, milk and soy, depending on the ingredients. Chips and crunchy pretzels can be choking hazards for young children. Check labels and choose an age-appropriate alternative when needed.
