TOOL ESSENTIALS

A small kitchen kit. A world of possibilities.

What to reach for first, what can wait, and how to shop around the food you actually want to make.

An approachable collection of useful kitchen tools

Start by opening your cupboards. You may already own most of what your first recipe needs. A useful kitchen kit is a small collection of tools you understand and use regularly.

Choose your first two or three recipes, list their equipment, and fill the genuine gaps. There is no need to buy a complete matching set.

Two useful additions for baking

A digital kitchen scale: useful for following recipes written in grams. Weighing ingredients gives you a repeatable starting point. King Arthur Baking offers scales and baking resources.

The pan your recipe requires: begin with a single suitable pan. An eight-inch square pan, a loaf pan, and a muffin tin produce different results and are not automatic substitutes. Add parchment or a cooling rack when the chosen recipe calls for them.

One product worth understanding

The ThermoWorks ThermoPop 2 is an example of a simple instant-read thermometer. It is used for spot checks, not left in the oven. Compare current manufacturer information, price, and your needs before purchasing. This is a reference example, not a hands-on product review.

Use FoodSafety.gov’s temperature chart for the appropriate food. Color alone does not establish that a food is safely cooked.

What can wait

A stand mixer, a large knife block, specialty bakeware, and several countertop appliances can wait until you have a specific use for them. They can be useful later; they are not prerequisites for your first homemade dinner.
