An original practice recipe, not independently kitchen-tested. Volume, timing and texture are estimates. Prepare popcorn according to your chosen product’s instructions.

This is a snack bowl, not a decorating competition. A few ribbons of white coating and a small shake of sprinkles give the popcorn its Christmas mood. Leave some pieces plain so there is a pleasant mix of sweet and salty.

Ingredients

  • 6 cups plain popped popcorn, cooled, with unpopped kernels removed
  • 1 cup small pretzels, broken into manageable pieces
  • 4 ounces (115 g) white candy melting wafers
  • 1 tablespoon small red and green sprinkles

The coating is made from confectionery wafers, not necessarily white chocolate. Check labels for milk, wheat, soy and other allergens. Popcorn, hard pretzels and small decorations may be unsuitable for young children or people who need modified textures.

Spread it out before the drizzle

  1. Line a large tray with parchment. Spread the cooled popcorn and pretzels in a shallow layer. Remove any remaining hard kernels you notice.
  2. Melt the wafers in a dry bowl following their package directions. An adult should handle the hot bowl and coating.
  3. Use a spoon to drizzle thin lines across the mixture. Gently turn a few sections with a clean spatula if you want coating on more surfaces; do not try to cover every piece.
  4. Add the sprinkles while the coating is soft. Leave to set under the wafer manufacturer’s instructions, roughly 30 minutes as a starting estimate.
  5. Break the set mixture gently into loose clusters and transfer to a serving bowl or paper snack cups.

Let it be a light coating

If the mixture becomes one heavy slab, spread it thinner next time and use a narrower drizzle. If you prefer less sweetness, hold back some coating. Changing the amount also changes the finished yield and texture.

For movie night

This is roughly six to eight small adult snack portions, depending on what else you serve. Put out a smaller bowl first, with refills kept covered. Add water or tea and something fresh from the movie-night snack plan.

Keep crunch in mind

Pack only when completely cool and set. Moisture and warm coating can soften popcorn, so this is best treated as a project for close to serving. Follow all ingredient storage instructions and keep in a suitable covered container. No shelf-life, mailing or long-term storage testing has been performed.

Because the serving size is measured in cups rather than individual pieces, this recipe is not included in the piece-count treat planner. For a planner-friendly sweet-and-salty option, choose cranberry crunch clusters.
